Bárbara Boeing’s Transmission From Space

I’ve been super excited to drop this mix for quite some time now. Barbara’s probably my favourite DJ in the world right now, and after we had to cancel her planned performance with us in April this seemed as good a stand-in as possible while we wait for the rescheduled date in November. It’s an absolute scorcher of a mix, that we’ve had on the hard-drive for a couple of months waiting to release, and has been on constant play here at the HQ. We asked her a couple of questions to go along with it which you can find just below, along with a tracklist right at the bottom, and you can listen to the mix at the link here:

TFS008 - Bárbara Boeing

Tech spec:

Pioneer DJM2000 Mixer

2x Pioneer XDJ-700

1x Technics 1200 Mk.II

  • Can you tell us a little bit about your technical setup/how and where you recorded the mix?

My mixing setup is composed by 2 XDJ-700, a mixer Pioneer 2000 Nexus and a Technics MK-2. I recorded it in my living room, the place where I spend most of my time when I am at home.

  • Did you have a specific idea for the mix before recording?

I was supposed to play at Apricot Ballroom on my last tour that would have happened from March 2020 to Europe and unfortunately, not only Sheffield but everything was cancelled because of CV-19. Gabriel, the owner of the party told me a little bit about its vibe and this was my inspiration to this podcast.

This type of venue/crowd with a more audiophile focus gives me freedom to do whatever I want musically and in my opinion, there is a big value in it because only a few things in my life can happen without so much planning and more about the feeling of it, so this led me everywhere. I went from a dark Trancey mood to a cheesy Brazilian Funk… It was fun to record, I hope you like it!

  • Do you think you have an ethos/style when it comes to DJing? And do you have a particular method for selecting records before sets or when you're playing?

Everyone has one or two genres that feels like they are naturals in it, kind of like as if they were born just to play this. For me, this feeling would happen not only in an exact genre, but easier vibes definitely complete my soul and make me happier after a hard day of work.

But, going on the other way of this natural feeling and also working as a lesson for me, I believe good DJs are the ones who play in every mood and for every type of crowd. So, my deepest efforts go into understanding the vibe of the people I am playing for, trying to predict a bit of the feeling from the DJ that will play before me and also the type of the club I will play at.

With this in mind, as a good Engineer, I make lots of plans before I play just so I can feel confident at it, but usually I change it all when I feel the real deal of people dancing in front of me with their own vibes. The selection of vinyl comes from this prediction which can sometimes work or sometimes I just need to adapt instantly to a new vibe.

If I only played vinyl this prediction would need to be exact and real life sometimes does not work as we predict, so I always like to be ready with my pen drive in hand just so I will not break the dance floor’s mood, and I will lead them into my vibe in a smoother way.

So, I would not say a specific ethos would define me, I can or at least I try to adapt to the right venue when the right moment arrives.

  • Can you tell us a little more about your Alter Disco party?

Alter Disco is a gathering of me and my best friends, my friends for life, who love the same music I do and got together for a non-profit party just to have fun.

Our main purpose was to bring new music to our city, a place in South of Brazil called Curitiba. We try to gather friends and friends of friends to keep the party a place where everyone can feel safe and can enjoy it with no worries.

  • How have you been keeping busy during the quarantine?

I am a civil engineer during the week, so I am quite busy finishing a big building I am co-responsible for.

As for music, I am doing some live shows, but I am a fan of the dance floors with real people (I think everyone is). Brazil is not dealing well with the COVID situation right now, so it can feel quite frustrating to work with music right now over here. I wish I could be more positive about that, but we are living in hard times.

  • Anything exciting planned for once the lockdowns are lifted?

I have just been accepted into 2 universities in Europe and my main plan is to do a Master’s in Europe starting from September. I wish I can be able to play everywhere in the continent for so many different people. I hope my plans can turn into reality.

Thanks again to Barbara for recording this belter of a mix for us, you can keep up with what she’s up to online here, here, and here, and check the mix out here.
